Maggie On The Brain (alternately titled: Muffin Head)

For some reason, I cannot get his image of Maggie out of my mind! I think it's because I was so surprised when she turned around and I got my first glimpse of what her teen years will look like! I knew that Cousin Callie had brought her make up and I knew that they were playing with it in the kitchen, but this shocked me.Needless to say, I obsess over a lot of parenting issues. For several weeks, I have been trying to make decisions on our schedule for the next preschool year. I want Maggie to be involved in fun activities without being over scheduled. Maggie will have school on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for three hours each day. She insists on going to Storytime at the Library on Thursdays, so we are left with one free weekday, which I think is great. I was asked to join MOPS at our Church, but it's every other Tuesday so our free days would be cut in half. I think I've decided to skip MOPS and take her to Awana Cubbies, but I'm still not sure! She also has children's choir on Sunday evenings. We (me & Maggie) had talked a little about signing up for dance classes (for her, not me) but I'm pretty sure we won't be doing that. I have no doubt that she'll enjoy all of the activity, but I also know that she loves having free-play time.

So...I'm curious. What coordinated activities did you do as a child?

It is hard to think of having enough for them to do without being over scheduled, huh? I didn't do a lot of structured things as a kid until I was like 5 I think. Most of what I did was sports, but then again I think they just had less stuff when we were small - don't you think? I signed Brynn up for a music class for wednesday mornings in the fall. But I think that's all I'm going to do with her for awhile. I like having a bit of free time :-)

I didn't do a lot other than youth group every Wednesday (I think you might have been there), Brownies for a year and t-ball for a year. I think that was all and I turned out fine. I do hope to get Andrew more involved but being too involved can definitely stress out everybody resulting in a houseful of temper tantrums.

Growing up, my parents never had the money to pay for anything "extra". I went to camp one summer, but really, until I hit school at age 6, my days were spent doing whatever mom was doing, or playing all day with my sisters! The same has sorta been the situation with me and my kids. Sometimes I feel guilty about how my daughter has never experienced Dance, or Gymnastics, or anything "great" like that. She did do horseback riding one summer, because an anonymous church member paid for it, and that was nice. Vacation Bible School was always a given, because I was usually always in charge! I have stopped thinking that they have "missed out" because instead, I have had the time with them, or, they are with aunts or their Nanny (my mom). Learning to quilt with her, cook with an aunt, selling lemonade on their own front lawn...I don't think that's so bad! Maggie seems to me like a well-rounded, entertaining and fun little girl! I'm sure whatever you decide, she'll just love it, and she won't feel at all, like she's missing out. Don't stress yourself out too much, because she'll just feed off of that. Put your choices in a hat, and pick one!! :)

Phew, that is a lot. I didn't do a lot of structured things until junior high where I did sports and drama and science... As a kid I did CYC/Awana type thing and shot Archery.
